It’s apparently so bad, you can’t even be sure that you’re getting actual olive oil inside your bottle of olive oil. The surprising truth is laid bare in the book “Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil” by Tom Mueller, released this month. 

The author, an American now living in Italy, spent months investigating the oil biz, which has had problems with corruption going back to the very first written mention of the foodstuff — a 24th-century B.C. cuneiform tablet that notes the king’s fraud squad was checking on olive mills.'
