A sweet surprise

Having triplets is no piece of cake.

But, ironically, the round frosted dessert delivered the news to Mom Paige Bourland her babies would be girl, boy, girl. It also informed all of Dallas/Fort Worth -- because it appeared on local television.

“I was 13 weeks pregnant and we went on the CW 33’s show The RC Project when I found out,” the Keller resident said. Wedged in between layers of cake, she discovered frosting colored in pastel pink, blue, pink. Dad Pacer Bourland knew a week ahead of time but didn’t want to spoil the surprise.

Cambrie, Addalynn, and Peyton were born November 2 at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southwest Fort Worth, each weighing around four pounds at 35 weeks gestation. They are the hospital’s first-ever set of triplets. Mom and babies are doing well, though Cambrie is spending time in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit to help with some respiratory issues.

Paige said she and Pacer, who are also parents to a three-year-old daughter, were surprised when they first learned they’d be seeing triple.

“I became pregnant through IUI (intra-uterine insemination) using three mature eggs, and there was a big percentage chance that only one would take,” Paige said. “I was shocked!”

Her first pregnancy through IUI ended in a miscarriage, but right afterward she was able to conceive her daughter naturally. She partially credits the rise in her hormone levels, she says.

Her advice for new moms?

“Don’t get too wrapped up in thinking about what will happen two years, five years, or 10 years down the road,” she says. “Take it day by day.”

In other words, savor motherhood like a fine dessert.
