Poison Prevention

Spring is officially here and for many that means spring cleaning. One aspect of spring cleaning you may not think of immediately though is poison prevention.  This is a great time to check the household medicines, cleaners, and chemicals to learn the value of poison prevention.

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services along with the American Association of Poison Control Centers offer several tips that will help to ensure a safe home environment for everyone.

Use original containers. Do not pour a chemical or other toxic product into another container.
Keep medicines out of the reach of children.
Use all medications and all household cleaning products according to the instruction on the labels.
Dispose of all hazardous materials properly.
While cleaning, ensure that your working environment is well-ventilated.
Wear gloves and other protective gear while using household chemicals.

If there are children in your home, teach them the proper use and disposal of household cleaning products to avoid accidental poisoning.  Also, keep the Poison Control number posted where each member of the family can easily access it in the event of an emergency.

“The key to poison prevention is you,” says Dr. Kara Starnes, a pediatrician on the medical staff at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen. “Knowing how to use, properly store and dispose of household chemicals and medicines may prevent serious risks such as breathing problems, overdose, and chemical burns.”
