Researchers Push Treating Pregnant Women With Antidepressants: Pseudoscience Reaches New Heights in JAMA Report

'In the face of recent studies documenting birth defects and increases in miscarriages resulting from antidepressant use during pregnancy, researchers want to push these drugs on pregnant women.'

'A metastudy on the effects of depression in pregnant women found what the authors termed only "modest" risks of preterm and low birth weight infants. So, their conclusion is to screen all pregnant women for depression—and treat them with antidepressants. They didn't bother to consider the risks of antidepressants taken during pregnancy. They simply decided that depression in pregnant women, no matter what the cause, should be drugged, no matter how severe the adverse effects.'

Antidepressants Delay Development in Newborns

'Exposure to antidepressants in late stages of pregnancy is linked to motor development problems particularly in boys, a new study finds.

Considering the high prevalence of depression during pregnancy, many expectant mothers use antidepressants even though their potential effects on the developing fetus remain unclear.

According to the study published in Pediatrics, newborns especially baby boys born to mothers, who used antidepressants during pregnancy, began to sit and walk later than those whose mothers had untreated depression.

Compared to their peers, these children were twice more likely to be unable to sit without support at the age of six. By the age of 19 months, they had attention problems and were unable to occupy themselves for longer than 15 minutes.

"The results of our study suggest an effect of antidepressant exposure on fetal brain development," concluded lead researcher Lars Henning Pedersen.'
