Feds found Pfizer too big to nail - Sounds like a cynical version of the Wall Street Mantra: “too big to fail”

'Dear god. I read this and couldn't believe it. For the record, I am pleasantly shocked to see something like this on CNN. Not the kind of story I'd usually expect from them because it's incredibly substantive. Basically, the feds caught Pfizer marketing off-label uses for a dangerous drug at TWICE the approved dose, and because Pfizer is SO enormous and makes SO many important medications for Medicaid and Medicare patients...they couldn't bust them. They instead "busted" a shell company that Pfizer created, and Pfizer was left with nothing more than a fine that cost them 3 lousy months' worth of profits from that ONE medication. We are well and truly OWNED, my friends. They might as well start tattooing our babies with brand names.'

By Drew Griffin and Andy Segal, CNN Special Investigations Unit

'-- Imagine being charged with a crime, but an imaginary friend takes the rap for you.

That is essentially what happened when Pfizer, the world's largest pharmaceutical company, was caught illegally marketing Bextra, a painkiller that was taken off the market in 2005 because of safety concerns.

When the criminal case was announced last fall, federal officials touted their prosecution as a model for tough, effective enforcement. "It sends a clear message" to the pharmaceutical industry, said Kevin Perkins, assistant director of the FBI's Criminal Investigative Division.

But beyond the fanfare, a CNN Special Investigation found another story, one that officials downplayed when they declared victory. It's a story about the power major pharmaceutical companies have even when they break the laws intended to protect patients.'

Ex-Pfizer Employee Claims in Lawsuit: Genetically Engineered Virus Gave Me Aids"

By EDMUND H. MAHONY
The Hartford Courant
March 14, 2010

'MEDICAL EXPERTS WILL BE WATCHING CLOSELY Monday when a scientist who says she has been intermittently paralyzed by a virus designed at the Pfizer laboratory where she worked in Groton opens a much anticipated trial that could raise questions about safety practices in the dynamic field of genetic engineering.

Organizations involved in workplace safety and responsible genetic research already have seized on the federal lawsuit by molecular biologist Becky McClain as an example of what they claim is evidence that risks caused by cutting-edge genetic manipulation have outstripped more slowly evolving government regulation of laboratories.

McClain, of Deep River, suspects she was inadvertently exposed, through work by a former Pfizer colleague in 2002 or 2003, to an engineered form of the lentivirus, a virus similar to the one that can lead to acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS. Medical experts working for McClain believe the virus has affected the way her body channels potassium, leading to a condition that causes complete paralysis as many as 12 times a month.'

Pfizer Told to Pay $142.1 Million for Neurontin Marketing Fraud

March 26 (Bloomberg) -- 'Pfizer Inc. violated U.S. racketeering law in the marketing of its epilepsy drug Neurontin and should pay $142.1 million in damages, a jury decided.

Kaiser Foundation Health Plan Inc. and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals claimed in a monthlong trial in federal court in Boston that Pfizer illegally promoted Neurontin for unapproved uses. The insurer said it was misled into believing migraines and bipolar disorder were among the conditions that could be treated effectively with Neurontin, approved in 1993 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for epilepsy.

“The jury found Pfizer engaged in a racketeering conspiracy over a 10-year period,” Tom Sobol, a lawyer for Kaiser, said after yesterday’s verdict. “That bodes well for future cases.”'

Pharmagate: Big Pharma Researcher Admits to Faking Dozens of Research Studies for Pfizer, Merck

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger

'It's being called the largest research fraud in medical history. Dr. Scott Reuben, a former member of Pfizer's speakers' bureau, has agreed to plead guilty to faking dozens of research studies that were published in medical journals.

Now being reported across the mainstream media is the fact that Dr. Reuben accepted a $75,000 grant from Pfizer to study Celebrex in 2005. His research, which was published in a medical journal, has since been quoted by hundreds of other doctors and researchers as "proof" that Celebrex helped reduce pain during post-surgical recovery. There's only one problem with all this: No patients were ever enrolled in the study!

Dr. Scott Reuben, it turns out, faked the entire study and got it published anyway.'
