Study Finds BPA Actually Changes Your Brain

'Researchers at North Carolina State University found that bisphenol-A (BPA) exposure in early life stages can actually cause gene expression changes. These effects are seen in a part of the brain called the amygdala, which can lead to increased levels of anxiety. What may surprise you is that soy—which has been accused of mimicking estrogen, as has BPA—prevented the behavioral changes.'

Shocking Health Effects of Commonly Used Pesticide: Brain Problems, Sexual Deformities and Paralysis

'Endocrine disruptors, synthetic chemicals that mimic and interfere with natural hormones, lurk everywhere from canned foods and microwave popcorn bags to cosmetics and carpet-cleaning solutions. The chemicals, which include pesticides, fire retardants and plastics, are in thermal store receipts, antibacterial detergents and toothpaste (like Colgate's Total with triclosan) and the plastic BPA which Washington state banned in baby bottles.

Endocrine disruptors are linked to breast cancer, infertility, low sperm counts, genital deformities, early puberty and diabetes in humans and alarming mutations in wildlife. They are also suspected in the epidemic of behavior and learning problems in children which has coincided, many say, with wide endocrine disruptor use.'

Want to Avoid BPA in Canned Foods? Stick with These Brands

Eden Beans

'If you weren’t already worried about the presence of the endocrine-disrupting chemical, (), in the foods you eat, a new study showing that consuming canned soup produces immediate increases in levels of in the body should give you cause for concern.

Numerous studies have linked BPA to health problems ranging from infertility and reproductive cancers to behavioral disorders in children. Canada recently banned BPA, classifying it as a dangerous toxin. The European Union has banned the use of BPA in baby bottles, and is moving towards banning it completely. In the U.S., however, the FDA so far has refused to take action to protect Americans from BPA exposure, yet has admitted that BPA is dangerous.'

'People who ate canned soup for five days straight saw their urinary levels of the chemical bisphenol A spike 1,200 percent compared to those who ate fresh soup, US researchers said on Tuesday.

The randomized study, described as "one of the first to quantify BPA levels in humans after ingestion of canned foods," was done by Harvard University researchers and appears in the Journal of the American Medical Association's November 23 issue.'

The BPA Solution: How to Naturally Reverse the Effects

'Bisphenol A (BPA) has made mainstream headlines as an estrogen-mimicking health destroyer. With 130 studies tying it to breast cancer, BPA has become an especially popular topic this October — National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Of course the negative effects of BPA do not end with cancer, with studies tying  BPA to obesity, hormonal imbalance, and a massive reduction in male fertility rates.

What makes BPA especially concerning to public health is the fact that it affects virtually everyone, is present in 95% of paper money and is in 18 out of 20 of the most popular canned foods. While there can be steps taken to avoid exposure, BPA is most likely present in your bloodstream way beyond ‘safe’ limits.'

Melissa Breyer Which Plastics to Never Use with Food

'Although the apron-wearing, martini-bearing, housewife-in-heels with her rainbow of Tupperware may be a thing of the past, the quest for a well-organized kitchen persists. To see tidy stacks of food-filled plastic containers in the fridge and freezer is comforting in a primal kind of way. But then comes the procession of warnings about storing and cooking food in plastic, and leaching chemicals, and hormone disruption, and ACK! So here it is: The lowdown on plastic food containers.

Flip over your favorite plastic food storage container and check the recycling code number. If you spy a number 3 or 7, well, those containers should probably go to the craft room or garage to store buttons or screws rather than food. If there is no number listed, contact the manufacturer. (And to be fair to Tupperware, they do manufacture products that are not made of these plastic types.)'

 BPA Receipts
'The federal government has made good on a two-year-old promise to add bisphenol A, a hormone-disrupting chemical linked to some cancers, to the country's list of toxic substances, in spite of industry opposition.

In 2008, Canada became the first country in the world to ban the chemical, an estrogen-mimicking substance also known as BPA, in baby bottles after concluding that the industrial chemical could eventually lead to prostate and breast cancer.

The next step for the government was to designate the chemical as toxic under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.'

BPA plastics chemical damages intestines, study shows

'The widespread toxin bisphenol-A (BPA) damages the intestines and may lead to a painful condition known as leaky gut syndrome, according to a study conducted by researchers from the National Institute of Agronomic Research researchers in Toulouse, France, and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy Sciences.

The study “shows the very high sensitivity on the intestine of BPA,” the National Institute of Agronomic Research said.'

Bisphenol A Linked to Increased Rate of Heart Disease

'While the FDA drags its feet on Bisphenol A (BPA) regulation so as to stave off a flood of lawsuits against the plastics industry, British researchers have documented that United States citizens have a 33% higher risk for coronary artery disease is they have higher levels of Bisphenol A.

Why does it take a foreign University to do the work of the FDA? The British research team found that a quarter of the population with the highest levels of BPA were more than twice as likely to report having heart disease or diabetes, compared to the quarter with the lowest BPA levels. They also found that higher BPA levels were associated with clinically abnormal liver enzyme concentrations.

6.4 billion pounds of BPA are produced every year, making it a rather large problem. Plastic containing BPA polymers carries the recycling symbol #7, which can also indicate other kinds of mixed plastics. The plastic may be called polycarbonate, lexan or polysulfone and is generally a clear, hard plastic, though it may be tinted different colors. Clear plastic baby bottles and children’s training cups are likely to be made of polycarbonate. Don’t wait around for the FDA to protect you.'
