'Scientists may have discovered hope for people suffering from brain and spinal tumors, in the form of an herb. Researchers at the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Southern California found that hypericin—a compound found in St. John’s Wort—not only reduced tumor size in people suffering from cancerous brain or spinal tumors, it also increased the rate of survival from this tragic disease.

Consider the seriousness of this form of cancer: approximately 10,000 Americans are diagnosed with a malignant glioma every year and the survival rate one year after diagnosis is only 50 percent.'

Weed Eater: Edible Weeds

04-00-044-weed2r1.jpg

'Thirty years ago, while living on a farm in Reynolds, Missouri, I used to help a neighboring hill woman in her large, wonderful garden in exchange for fresh farm eggs and firewood. As we pulled weeds, Mrs. Glore, who was old enough to have outlived three husbands, would declare: “Why, youse can eat these. It’s lamb’s-quarters. It’s wild spinach, and it’s good fer ya! Even better than the store-bought kind!”

She’d incorporate the weeds into the evening’s dinner, doubling or tripling the yield of her garden. Over the years, I’ve developed my own appreciation for plants that others yank out and throw away. Weeds have survived centuries of adversity and are often much more durable than cultivated plants. Many do well without irrigation, are resistant to frost and trampling, and offer themselves freely and abundantly.'

Why You Need To Praise Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme This Winter

'Those of us who go back a few years likely remember the line about parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme in the huge Simon and Garfunkel hit song about two ill-fated lovers, "Are You Going to Scarborough Fair". Many have speculated that the reference to the four popular herbs was due to their use in Medieval Europe to help cleanse the air and ward off the infamous black plague. Others have thought that the reference to the four herbs was because the combination may have been used as a love potion.

Whatever the reason for their inclusion in the popular song, the many health benefits of those four popular spices make them a herbal health quartet worth loving and singing praises about in their own rights.'
