Cinnamon beats Alzheimers

'The miracle spice cinnamon is the scented bark of a tropical evergreen tree, native to India and Sri Lanka. Cinnamon comes from an evergreen tree in Southeast Asia and is cultivated widely in Vietnam, China, Burma, and Laos for its bark and the oil processed from the bark. Once upon a time in ancient Rome, cinnamon was worth more than silver.

Cinnamon is harvested from the inner bark of the tree branches after scraping off the corky outer layer and then drying the bark. As it dries, the bark curls up into quills which are then cut into sticks to be ground into the spice form. Full of calcium and fiber, cinnamon is one of the oldest known spices, it is mentioned in the Bible and was used in ancient Egypt as medicine, beverage flavoring and an embalming agent.'

'Spices do more than make food taste
great. Recent research is showing that spices can reduce signs of aging,
inhibit degenerative disease, and promote health and wellbeing. The Mediterranean diet,
so often associated with good health and lack of disease, relies
heavily on the use of spices. But you don't have to follow the
Mediterranean way of eating to gain the amazing health benefits these
inexpensive flavor boosters have to offer.

Spices
have been highly valued throughout history. In 2300 B.C. the Assyrians
wrote that the gods drank sesame seed wine before creating the
earth. Spices were the currency that sent adventurers across unknown
oceans to find new trade routes. Columbus discovered the New World
during a trip in search of spices, and the British Raj occupied India to
access its spice and tea trade.'

The Health Benefits of Cumin

'Cumin is a seed that has been used since antiquity. This traditional herb is known for its health benefits and medicinal uses for hundreds of years.

Cumin is useful for digestive disorders and even as an antiseptic. The seeds themselves are rich in iron and help boost the power of the liver.

It is used to treat indigestion, diarrhoea, nausea and morning sickness. The seeds are boiled in water to make a tea with one teaspoon of seeds to one glass water. It is then mixed with salt and a teaspoon of coriander leaf juice.

Cumin also helps relieve symptoms of common cold. If you have a sore throat, try adding some dry ginger to cumin water, to help soothe it.

Due to its antiseptic properties, when applied topically, Cumin is said to be a good ointment for boils. Make a black cumin paste by grinding seeds with water and apply to the affected area.

Cumin juice makes for a great tonic for the body even if you don’t have a specific ailment. It is said to increase the heat in the body thus making metabolism more efficient.

It is also considered to be a powerful kidney and liver herb which can help boost the immune system. It’s also believed that black cumin seeds can treat asthma and arthritis.'
