Fluoride damages memory, but selenium may help reduce the damage

Editor's Note: Eat 2-3 Selenium Rich Brazil Nuts a Day.

'A new study in Wei Shen Yan Jiu (Journal of Hygiene Research) suggests that taking selenium supplements or eating selenium rich foods may help reduce the damage to neurons and minimize memory loss induced by fluoride, which is added in drinking water in the U.S.

Z. Zhang of Zhejiang Normal University in Jinhua, China and colleagues conducted the study and found supplementation of selenium in a moderate dose can decrease the toxic effect of fluoride.  High doses of selenium can also cause side effects, the researchers found.'

Does Marijuana Make You Stupid?

'This study builds on previous work by Harvard researchers
demonstrating that the learning and memory impairments of heavy
marijuana users typically vanish within 28 days of “smoking cessation.”
(The slight impairments still existed, however, one week after smoking.)
While several days might sound like a long hippocampal hangover, heavy
alcohol users typically experience deficits that persist for several
months, if not years. In other words, heavy marijuana use appears to be a
lot less damaging than alcoholism.

Taken together, these studies demonstrate that popular stereotypes of
marijuana users are unfair and untrue. While it’s definitely not a good
idea to perform a cognitively demanding task (such as driving!) while
stoned, smoking a joint probably also won’t lead to any measurable
long-term deficits. The Dude,
in other words, wasn’t dumb because he inhaled. He was dumb because he
was The Dude. (All those White Russians probably didn’t help, either.)'

Walking Just 1 Mile a Day Helps Save Your Memory

http://www.sciencedaily.com/images/2007/07/070711134426-large.jpg

'Walking an average of just one mile a day appears to protect against brain shrinkage in old age, which in turn helps stem the onset of memory problems and cognitive decline, new research reveals.
"We have always been in search of the drug or the magic pill to help treat brain disorders," noted Kirk I. Erickson, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Pittsburgh and the study's lead author.

"But really what we are after may be, at least partially, even simpler than that. Just by walking regularly, and so maintaining a little bit of moderate physical activity, you can reduce your likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease and [can] spare brain tissue."
A report on the research, which was supported by the U.S. National Institute on Aging, is published online Oct. 13 in Neurology.'

How The City Hurts Your Brain And What You Can Do About It

"Can city life harm your memory and stunt your ability to control yourself?

New research is revealing how urban living can actually harm the human brain.

After millennia of living surrounded by nature in small tribes and villages, ancient peoples began to gather in early cities in the Middle East, Egypt, China, Europe and the jungles of the Americas. Since then, humans have come to treasure the intellectual, economic and cultural stimulation that urban life offers.

But modern cities are also what Boston Globe essayist Jonah Lehrer, author of How The City Hurts Your Brain...and What You Can Do About It, calls "deeply unnatural and overwhelming places."

Sleepy? Why lack of sleep may harm you.

Do you get better sleep? well, you must.

Just right after i finished college. The first job i got was in a call center, An outbound agent. And i was on a grave yard shift. That was (9pm until 6am) It was ok at first but after just 2 months i felt that i was lacking of sleep.

Even though i knew that i was sleeping around 7 hours a day, it wasn't easy sleeping in the morning. I tried to closed the door of my bed room and pulled down my curtain, but the broad day light was just peeking at my windows.

Of all the health complains i had while i was on that job. There was one thing i learned while working in that kind of environment that up to this moment, I still apply in my daily life. That is to complete your 8 hours of sleep. Why? Because there might be dangers waiting for you especially if you are working.

So what happens when you never complete your 8-hour sleep very often.

Poor vision. this is so true to me. I got blurry vision at work, or just when I'm walking to the elevator. It sucks so much. Short term memory, People tend to lose some parts of their memories due to lack of enough sleep.

Your reaction is slow. Have you ever felt that when everyone is laughing, you seem to be just smiling? why because you don't get it. because you don't understand. Or if somebody is talking to you. You seem to be somewhere else.

Never drive yourself to work if you think you can't focus. My dad caused a very long traffic when he doze off on a green light few years ago. That was humiliating so he got his self a driver.

Moody. you switch moods so easily. Poor performance. Your work suffers because you can't concentrate. So if you feel that you are stating to see these signs. better take a goodnight sleep. or tale some power naps in the afternoon.
